Raila Odinga blasts the police "against the people"

The leader of the ODM, Raila Odinga, lambasted the NPS for being the enemy of the people.

He stated increasing police brutality leading to civilian deaths is evidence the service requires urgent reform, beginning with its leadership downwards.

"Even if you were to get stuck or lost in the town, approach an officer to assist you the way, you can end up being jailed and asked to give a bribe of Sh2,000 in a police cell," he stated in an interview on all Mt. Kenya radio and television stations on Friday.

"We have a police service that the colonialists brought...

Their work was to target and beat Africans, "He underlined that officers were supposed to protect and serve the people.

Raila: The colonial attitude of our cops is displeasing.

Mr Odinga claimed that he had acquaintances who have been subjected to oppressive behaviour by police.

"I waited just for them in the boardroom to hear that they couldn't show up because they had been detained on their way for bogus reasons."

His observations occurred when Commissioner John Waiganjo of the Independent Police Supervisory Authority (IPOA) advocated the eventual dissolution of the Department of General Duties of the National Police Service.

"The department is neglected and works in exceedingly challenging conditions. The police leadership has turned this group of officers into a walking risk as promotion, transfer and welfare is used in this pool to frustrate officers," Mr Waiganjo said yesterday.
